Welcome to class 3W! When you enter our room, you will find a room full of smart, well-mannered children with smiling facesWe are resilient, ambitious and most importantly we love to learn. We like to face challenges together as well as working independently, and we believe that it is very important to learn from each other. We have made an excellent start to our learning journey in KS2, and we are excited to achieve our very best! 

Topics:  

Tribal Tales – We are heading back to prehistoric times during this topic to gather berries and hunt down dinner. We be learning about ancient artefacts and mystical monuments that reveal the secrets of the Stone Age. Additionally, we will be learning about the job role of an archaeologist and completing our very own archaeological dig with the hope of finding some artefacts from the Stone Age. We can’t wait to learn all about the clothes and jewellery they wore and how it differs from ours today.  

Gods and Mortals – During this topic, we will learn about the civilisation of Ancient Greece. We are excited to discover a magical world full of mythical creatures and legendary heroes. Poseidon, Apollo, Artemis and Zeus reign almighty from Mount Olympus, watching mere mortals on dusty Athenian streets. We will be studying ancient Greek vases and will be creating our own made from clay. For our topic launch, we will be spending the day studying ancient Greek soldiers, their formations during battles and making our very own shield.  

Tremors – Then we will be learning about volcanoes and earthquakes – how and why they happen and where in the world they are most likely to occur. We will also investigate the effects of these natural phenomena examining the eruption of Mount Vesuviusin 79 AD and how it devastatedthe city of Pompeii.During this time we will be reading Escape from Pompeii with a hope to understand how people felt during this natural disaster. We can’t wait to make our own model volcanoes and learn about how scientists measure earthquakes using seismographs. 

Scrumdiddlyumptious  Our final topic is all about food from around the world. We will be tucking in and enjoying a yummy journey of discovery, tasting fantastic fruits, venerable vegetables and tantalising treats! We will work up an appetite with delicious stories about food, have fun with a vegetable orchestra and maybe become a fruity sculptor. Excitingly, we will be reading lots of recipes and even writing our own! We may also have the chance to get busy in the kitchen making tasty dishes from across the world whilst discovering how good food helps you grow fit and strong. 

English texts:   

Our first text is ‘Leaf’, and this tells the heartwarming story about a polar bear that finds himself lost in a rain forest. We will learn all about how the animals in the rain forest felt about this and what they decided to do about the strange situation. We will then be writing our own diary entries from the perspective of the crow, using all of our knowledge from the story.  

The second text to tie in with our ‘Tribal Tales’ topic is ‘Stone Age Boy’. This story is all about a little boy who suddenly stumbles and falls… into the Stone Age! He meets a young girl and her tribe, and finds out all about how different life was during this time! I wonder if he will make it back home?  

Towards the end of year three, we will be reading a text that may be familiar to you all- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This ties in well with our ‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’ topic which is all about foods from around the world. We will have the opportunity to invent and describe our very own sweet- which Willy Wonka would be proud to sell in his chocolate factory.

School roles:  

In our class, we have voted for many different roles for the children to undertake. These are: class ambassadors, school council member, well-being warrior, playground warrior, class librarian, maths champion and science ambassador. We are excited to begin these roles and responsibilities, and we can’t wait to help each other.  

Important information about life in Year 3  

In order to develop our fluency and confidence, we need to read at least three times a week; this can be a mixture of our home reading book and Bug Club. It is also very helpful for us to discuss the book we are reading. We need to practise our spellings and maths each day ready for our tests. We want to continue moving up the times tables rainbow, so we need to practise our 3, 4 and 8 times tables as often as possible. It is important that we access Bug Club, Spelling Shed and TT Rockstars at home as this is an engaging way for us to develop our knowledge.  
Enrichment is a fabulous opportunity for us to try something new and develop life skills. Each term, we can choose two different activities to complete. Our activities this term are: creative craft, rugby, yoga, photography and construction. 

We look forward to having an exciting year in year three!

Hello and welcome to 3H! We have settled in to KS2 extremely well, and we have really enjoyed our learning so far. We are enthusiastic individuals who love to learn, and are eager to try our best in everything that we do. We are excited for the year ahead, and can’t wait to progress and achieve in all areas of our learning.

Important information about life in Year 3 

Homework is a crucial part of learning, to ensure that children are applying their learning from class. The children should be reading at least three times a week, and completing both spellings and maths. The children should be engaging with our educational websites such as Bug Club, Spelling Shed and Timestable Rockstar’s. This is an interactive way to engage the childrenand to encourage them to keep up their learning at home. Our MASTER values will be integrated into all areas of our learning, as we think about what will make us grow as individuals. Our enrichment afternoons will also be the perfect chance for the children to engage with activities they may have never tried before. These will take place every other Friday, and the children will choose two activities to try. They will have the chance to build upon their learning and skills during the sequence of lessons. During the first half term, yoga, construction, creative crafts, photography and rugby will be the activities on offer to the children.  

We have a very busy but exciting year to look forward to. However, our aim is for the children to enjoy the next chapter of their learning journey, and have a fabulous academic year.
