At Eaton Park Academy, we view homework as being Enjoyable, Pertinent and Adaptable.

We believe that homework not only reinforces classroom learning, but it also helps children and young people to develop skills and attitudes that they need for successful lifelong learning. Homework should support the development of independent learning skills as it enables children to practise, consolidate and take responsibility for their own learning.

We want our homework to help to foster the role of parents and carers as co-educators of their children. We believe that homework facilitates the continuing development of the partnership between school and parents. We want parents to play an important role in encouraging and supporting children’s efforts by being aware of our homework expectations and any key dates, but empowering children to be responsible for completing and handing in homework (with increasing independence). As an academy, we believe that homework should not cause conflict at home between parent and child and we would always encourage parents to approach the school for support should this be the case.

Reading Homework
Reading is at the heart of our academy therefore it is a homework expectation. Parents should hear their child read at least three times a week at home to develop the skills of reading taught in school. The ‘Book Worm’ runs each half term recognising children who read five times or more a week. A reading diary is provided for parents to enable them to communicate to school any comments about their child’s reading practice. These reading diaries are checked by the teacher and stamped to show when a child has met the reading homework expectation.

Homework Expectations
Alongside reading, children will bring home weekly spelling and maths tasks and will be set termly creative project homework. We do not specify amounts of time that must be spent on a task, preferring individual children and families to set their own routines. Individual teachers are happy to give advice.

Below our homework expectations and routines are detailed for each year group.

Homework library club and homework club

If your child struggles to complete their homework at home or if you are having a busy week and cannot fit homework tasks in at home, your child has 2 options to complete their homework in school each week.

  • Attend homework library club on a Wednesday during lunch time, where a teacher is available to help them.
  • Sign up for homework club which runs after school as part of our extra-curricular provision, where they can complete their homework with staff support and access in school resources to help them.

Responding to children and ensuring that homework is completed

Across the school, children are rewarded for their efforts in completing weekly homework tasks and given encouraging comments and stickers. Homework will be shared within the class and creative projects are displayed proudly in school. Homework is tracked using Track- it Lights and green behaviours are be logged for spelling, maths and reading each week and termly for creative project homework.

The children’s engagement with homework tasks are closely monitored by the class teacher and homework lead, ensuring any children who are not completing their homework are spoken to so that help can be provided in school if and when needed. They will investigate the reasons for homework not being completed before responding with sanctions. Sanctions are set for children who do not complete homework frequently and are at the class teacher’s discretion in discussion with the homework lead. We aim to review our homework expectations and value feedback from parents. Please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Mellor if you have any questions or queries regarding our homework expectations.

Thank you.

The school is a happy and positive community.
