As an academy, we have a school council consisting of a representative from each class from Year 1 to Year 6, who are voted for as part of a democratic process.

What is a school council?

A school council is group of pupils who are elected to represent the views of all pupils and to improve their school.

The school council does a number of things:

  • The school council meets, with Mrs Whitmore, to discuss and sort out problems. These may include school lunches, behaviour, attendance or ideas for fundraising events.
  • Members of the school council are responsible for carrying out the ideas that have been agreed. This may include speaking to relevant members of staff, creating posters to be display

What are the aims of the school council?

  • To make sure that our school is a safe and happy place for children.
  • To make sure that children have a place to voice their concerns.
  • To encourage all children in the school to suggest improvements.
  • To make sure any suggestions or concerns are listened to and acted upon.

What makes our school council a good one?

A good school council is one that represents the views of all pupils and gets things done.

What has our school council done previously?

  • Created a child-friendly mission statement for the academy
  • Presented their views of the academy to governors
  • Undertaken a health and safety walk around the school
  • Explored how we can improve attendance and created attendance posters to display around the school
  • Made important decisions to help improve playtimes

Our 23-24 school council plans:

When I met with the children, they explain what they see their role as and what they hope to achieve and see this year:

  • To see everyone involved in lessons
  • To include everyone in decisions
  • To ensure decisions are voted for in classrooms
  • More clubs linked to different subjects
  • Posters to promote the Wednesday homework club
  • Litter picking being promote by eco-warriors and playground warriors
  • High vis jackets for playground warriors for everyone to know who they are
  • Playground warriors to have clear roles
  • Fundraising to buy bins for around the school
  • To organise activities for children on KS2 playground for children who may not like sport
  • Staff/playground warriors spread out on the KS2 yard during break and dinner time to cover the football pitch
  • Ambassador duties are in place and working well

The school is a happy and positive community.
